We want to get you writing in 2011
Acorn Independent Press is helping budding authors to brave their first novel through a free scheme launching on 10th January 2011.
Authors signing up to our Write Your Novel This Year newsletter will receive monthly emails focusing on different aspects of the novel-writing process and exercises to get them started. There will also be feature tutorials, tips and advice to keep them on track as it becomes tougher to keep those New Year’s Resolutions. Writers can sign up on Acorn Independent Press’ website

This scheme is perfect for developing writers – whether you have never written before or want a few exercises to get the creative juices flowing or even cure writers’ block. Write Your Novel This Year will give you the fundamental building blocks of novel writing and give your writing a boost.
In January, we will be focusing on creating great characters and giving you tasks to go out with your notebook and complete.
Leila Dewji, Editorial Director, gives you her top 5 tips to get you writing:
- Believe in yourself and be brave. This is going to be a journey, no writer gets it perfect first time – be patient and you will get there.
- Find a space. Where are you going to write? You might have a peaceful home, but if not you need to find a quiet space where you feel comfortable. Take one of your favourite books with you to inspire you when you are suffering writers’ block.
- Commit. Are you a morning or an evening person? could you sneak half an hour before work or after the kids go to bed. Set a realistic weekly goal and stick to it religiously. Force yourself to write. Even if you feel totally uninspired and it ends up in the bin, you will have learnt something from the process.
- Observe. Buy a lovely notebook and take it everywhere with you – you never know when you are going to meet your next character.
- Read. Read as much and as widely as you can – not just in the genre you plan to write. You can learn something from every book you pick up, even if it’s what not to do
Good Luck
